Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
A Summentary
|
The following is a summentary by Caspian Holden. A chapter
summentary is defined as a summary of the events of the chapter
with commentary, thoughts, and ideas interspersed.
Chapter 1: The Other Minister
|
We join the story two weeks after the end of term. We are
introduced to the Prime Minister of Britain or, as J.K. Rowling
calls him, “the other minister” in his office contemplating the
events of the past couple of weeks.
For the first time of the series there is a break from the
narrative flow. Every event in the first five books is some how
directly related to Harry; he either witnesses the events directly
or indirectly (i.e. through the pensieve or dreams).
This departure is almost startling to the reader and definitely
seems like J.K. is trying to call our attention to these chapters.
Is this solely to demonstrate how the magical world and the muggle
world collide?
A grim mood has gripped the country.
Page 2, U.S. Hardcover Edition
We now know that this bleakness is due to the fact that dementors
have joined the Death Eaters. Their presence has cast a dark and
eerie mood over Britain.
Apparently, all hell has been breaking lose since the battle at
the Ministry. The Brockdale Bridge has collapsed, there was a
hurricane in the West Country, Amelia Bones and Emmeline Vance (a
member of the Order) have been murdered, and one of the Junior
Ministers, Herbert Chorley, has been acting out of sorts (an
apparent victim of a poorly performed Imperius Curse).
Cornelius Fudge visits the Prime Minister and we learn that this
is all the work of Lord Voldemort and his posse. We also learn
that Rufus Scrimgeour has replaced Fudge as Minister of Magic.
There was an immediate impression of shrewdness and toughness; the
Prime Minister thought he understood why the Wizarding community
preferred Scrimgeour to Fudge as a leader in these dangerous times.
Page 16, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
During the visit the Prime Minister thinks back to his previous
encounters with Fudge. It is here that we see the first allusion
to Horcruxes. When the P.M. asks Fudge if LV’s return means that
he is alive, he receives this as a response:
“Yes, alive,” said Fudge. “That is —― I don’t know —― is a man
alive if he can’t be killed? I don’t really understand it, and
Dumbledore won’t explain it properly —― but anyway, he’s certainly
got a body and is walking and talking and killing, so I suppose,
for the purposes of our discussion, yes, he’s alive.”
Page 11, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
In chapter two, we are re-introduced to the Bellatrix Lestrange
and her sister Narcissa Malfoy (Cissy). Narcissa is on a mission
complete by LV.
Narcissa is certain that her son will die trying and knows that no
one is as close to LV as Snape is. Bellatrix thinks that LV is
mistaken for trusting Snape. They enter Snape’s house and see that
Wormtail is there with him. LV placed Wormtail with Snape so that
he could be of assistance.
Bellatrix openly tells Snape that she does not trust him. She
questions his whereabouts when LV fell, why did he never try to
find LV, what has Snape been doing while living in Dumbledore’s
pocket, why is Harry still alive, etc. Snape answers each question
in succession:
- he had been at Hogwarts under LV’s orders to spy on
- he did not search for LV because he believed he was dead;
- LV pleased that Snape had 16 years of information on
Dumbledore to give him when he returned;
- he did mot hand over the philosopher’s stone because LV did
not yet know if he could trust Snape and did not reveal
himself;
- by waiting two hours to return to LV, he ensured that he
could remain at Hogwarts as a spy;
- he has passed on information leading to the Vance murder
and disposal of Sirius Black.
He also speaks of Dumbledore’s greatest weakness – he has to
believe the best of people. Because of this, he has been able to
manipulate the circumstances.
Narcissa has come to ask Snape if he can look out for Draco. She
refers to Snape as LV’s favorite and most trusted advisor. She
wants him to help Draco complete his task and asks him to make the
Unbreakable Vow. Bellatrix is stunned when Snape agrees. This
sparks the battle among readers – Is Snape Good or Evil? Despite
his seemingly cool exterior, there is a moment of hesitation when
Snape’s hand twitches. Is this because he is affected by the idea
of carrying out Draco’s task for him?
“And, should it prove necessary... if Draco will fail…” whispered
Narcissa (Snape’s hand twitched within hers, but he did not draw
away), “will you carry out the deed that the Dark Lord has ordered
Draco to perform?”

We finally arrive at Privet Drive. Harry is waiting for Dumbledore
to come rescue him from the Dursleys. The Daily Prophet has been
printing stories about Harry being the “Chosen One” who will save
the Wizarding world from evil. Even though he is anxious to leave,
he has not packed because he is afraid that it is somehow a joke
and Dumbledore will not appear.
Dumbledore does, however, come to fetch Harry and the Dursleys are
in utter shock to see him. Dumbledore acts as the host in their
house directing them to the living room and pouring glasses of
mead for all. Why is it suddenly acceptable to serve mead to
minors?!
It turns out that Sirius left Harry all his possessions in his
will. The Order is unsure if the Black family did not has some
sort of enchantments in place preventing this transfer of their
property outside of the family (if Harry does not inherit
everything, Bellatrix Lestrange is next in line). They test it by
Harry giving the house-elf, Kreacher, an order. They prove Harry
did in fat inherit Sirius’s estate as Kreacher begrudgingly must
obey Harry’s order. Harry then sends Kreacher to Hogwarts to work
in the kitchens with the other house elves.
Before leaving the Dursleys’ Dumbledore asks them for a favor. He
scolds them form mistreating Harry as a child and not giving him
the affection he deserved. He also says that despite his
mistreatment, Harry is protected because Dumbledore evoked magic
15 years means Harry is protected as long as he can call the
Dursleys’ house home (does this mean that the protection ends now
that Dumbledore is dead?). He asks the Dursleys to allow Harry to
return once more before his 17th Birthday so that the protection
can extend as long as possible.
Chapter 4: Horace Slughorn
|
Dumbledore asks Harry to make a detour with him on the way to the
Weasley’s. In order to get to their destination, Harry apparates
alongside Dumbledore. He must be careful when holding onto
Dumbledore’s arm as it is “fragile.” He does not have time to tell
Harry the story of what happened to his arm, but he is wearing the
Opal ring.
Harry asks Dumbledore about Inferi as he is uncertain what they
are. Dumbledore explains that they are corpses. They are dead
bodies that have been bewitched so they can do the bidding of a
Dark wizard. The last time Lord Voldemort was in power he made an
army of them.
We are introduced to Horace Slughorn in an interesting setting.
Harry and Dumbledore arrive at his house and find the place
trashed and blood smeared on the walls. Slughorn faked the grisly
scene to avoid Dumbledore. He knew that he was going to be asked
to return to teach at Hogwarts and is enjoying his leisure time
right now. After chatting a bit, Dumbledore goes to use the
bathroom and leaves Harry and Slughorn alone.
Slughorn tells Harry that a teacher shouldn’t have favorites, but
Lily was one of his. She was incredibly bright and vivacious. He
also mentions Sirius and Regalus Black. Harry makes a point of
noting that Hermione is brilliant and Muggle-born. He seems
offended that Slughorn thinks this is the exception to the rule
and only pure-bloods are the most talented.
“Well, anyway, he was a big pal of your father’s at school.
The whole Black family had been in my House, but Sirius ended up
in Gryffindor! Shame ― he was a talented boy. I got his brother,
Regalus, when he came along, but I’d have liked the set.”
“Your mother was Muggle-born, of course. Couldn’t believe it
when I found out. Thought she must have been pure-blood she was so
good.”
“One of my best friends is Muggle-Born,” said Harry, “and
she’s the best in our year.”
“Funny how that happens sometimes, isn’t it?” said Slughorn.
“Not really,” said Harry coldly.
Page 70, U.S. Hard Cover Edition
|
Slughorn goes on to tell Harry about the original Slug Club. He is
proud to keep in touch with ex-students who have gone on to
important careers. Slug enjoyed influencing influential people. He
is no longer able to communicate with anyone as he has been on the
run for a year. He is afraid the Death Eaters might want him to
lend his talents to them. Harry points out that he probably would
be safer at Hogwarts than anywhere else. Slug takes this to heart
and agrees to teach at Hogwarts. Dumbledore reappears at the
perfect moment to announce their departure. It is clear that he
used Harry as a tool to get what he wanted.
Dumbledore delivers Harry to the Burrow. He tells him that he will
be giving him private lessons this year. He thinks it is time he
took a greater role in Harry’s education. He also warns Harry to
be very careful and not to get into trouble while at the Burrow.
He warns him to carry his Invisibility Cloak with him at all
times. He gives Harry permission to tell Hermione and Ron about
the prophecy. Dumbledore thinks it would be doing them a
disservice not to tell them. Harry says that he noticed that
people keep getting murdered and realizes he could be next. He
vows to take down as many death eaters as he can when the tie
comes. Rather than scolding him, Dumbledore thinks this is a
wonderful idea. How does this make any sense?
Chapter 5: An Excess of Phlegm
|
Harry enters the Burrow and is greeted by Mrs. Weasley. She is
there with Tonks, who is not quite herself and seems depressed.
Harry is happy to see Crookshanks because it means that Hermione
is at the Burrow too. Mr. Weasley returns home late from work. He
was promoted at the Ministry and is working overtime. He is also
very precautious about the Ministry warnings put forth in the
pamphlets. Mrs. Weasley notes the late hour and ushers Harry off
to bed in the Fred and George’s old room. Harry notes that there
is a large vase of flowers on the desk and their perfume almost
covers the remnants of gunpowder used by the twins.
The next morning, Ron and Hermione wake Harry up to greet him.
Hermione is clearly worried about Harry and watches him as if he
were about to break. Ginny walks in and makes fun of Fleur,
calling her Phlegm. Hermione says that she is full of herself. Ron
is still oddly affected by her even though he should be used to
her presence by now. Mrs. Weasley is not happy with Bill and Fleur’
s engagement. She feels they are rushing things, just like the
last time Lord Voldemort was strong. People rushed into
relationships and commitments because they feared death.
Ginny believes that Mrs. Weasley is going to attempt to stop the
wedding. Ginny also thinks that Bill should marry Tonks instead of
Fleur and Ron rushes to defend Fleur. Hermione defends Tonks
saying that she is just upset over Sirius’s death.
When they finally have a minute alone, Harry tells Ron and
Hermione about the prophecy. Hermione gets so nervous she squeezes
the telescope she is holding and gets hit in the eye (a left-over
gadget from the twins). She is clearly very worried about Harry
and scared for his well-being. Both Ron and Hermione try to play
it cool, though, and say that they expected something like this.
Harry wonders about them standing by him as this unfolds and it
means more to him than he can ever put into words.
He suddenly remembers that they are due to get their O.W.L.
results that day. Hermione freaks at the mere mention of it. Ron
got seven O.W.L.s, but no ‘Outstanding’ grades. Harry passed all
the O.W.L.s, except for divination and History of Magic, achieving
an ‘Outstanding’ in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Brilliant
Hermione got ten Outstandings and only one ‘Exceeds Expectations’
in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
News of disappearances, odd accidents and deaths are appearing
daily in the newspaper. Sometimes the news of some unfortunate
event would reach the Burrow via Mr. Weasley or Bill before it
even was published. On Harry’s Birthday, they heard of another
death.
“And they’ve found Igor Karkaroff’s body in a shack up north. The
Dark Mark had been set over it ― well, frankly, I’m surprised he
stayed alive for even a year after deserting the Death Eaters;
Sirius’s brother, Regalus only managed a few days as I can
remember.”
Page 106, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
Note: Regalus Black is mentioned A LOT in this book. It is our
opinion that this is an anvil, or rather a subtle hint because
that's how Rowling signals important info, telling us to notice
who R.A.B might be.
Florean Fortescue of the ice cream shop in Diagon Alley and
Ollivander of the wand shop are missing too. If the Death Eaters
have Ollivander, then everyone is in trouble. He is the best wand
maker ever.
The day after Harry’s Birthday, the back to school letters arrived
from Hogwarts. Harry was named Quidditch Captain. Hermione is
elated as he now has equal status with the prefects. The gang
decides to head to Diagon Alley for the purchase of books and
school supplies. Dumbledore arranges for Hagrid to act as their
bodyguard in Diagon Alley. Harry is genuinely excited and happy to
see him. He escorts Ron, Hermione, and Harry to buy new dress
robes while the rest of the group goes to Flourish and Blotts.
Inside Madam Malkins the kids run into Draco Malfoy and his
mother, Narcissa. Draco and his mother act condescending,
referring to Hermione as a mudblood. Ron and Harry are quick to
defend her, making Madam Malkin nervous. Narcissa tells Harry:
“I see that being Dumbledore’s favorite has given you a false
sense of security, Harry Potter. But Dumbledore won’t always be
there to protect you.”
Page 113, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
When Madam Malkin tries to adjust the length of Draco’s left
sleeve, he freaks out and decides to leave the shop. Madam Malkin
distractedly fit Ron, Hermione, and Harry for there robes and
sends them on their way.
The last stop before heading home is Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes,
Fred and George’s shop. They welcome the group and tell Harry he
can help himself as they haven’t forgotten where they got their
start-up money from. They have a large assortment of unique items,
including Patented Daydream Charms which allow you to live a
daydream for 30 minutes. They’ve also developed a line of Defense
Against the Dark Arts products, some of which are used by the
Ministry of Magic. They are importing Instant Darkness Powder from
Peru. They show Ginny and Hermione a line of products designed
especially for girls.
Near the window was an array of violently pink products around
which a cluster of excited girls was giggling enthusiastically.
Hermione and Ginny both hung back, looking wary.
“There you go,” said Fred proudly. “Best range of love potions you’
ll find anywhere.”
Ginny raised an eyebrow skeptically. “Do they work?” she asked.
Page 120, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
Note: Another anvil is the constant mention of love potions in
this book. Is one being used or does J.K.R. just want us to think
that one is being used?
Apparently, Ginny doesn’t need any help in that department. The
boys start questioning her about her rumored five boyfriends. She
gets aggressive and says that there is only one. Harry does not
seem phased by any of this news.
As the Wesley’s look at Pygmy Puffs, Harry notices Malfoy slip
down the street. He has obviously given his mother the slip.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione follow him under the invisibility cloak
to Borgin and Burkes. Malfoy asks the shop keeper for help in
fixing something. He threatens him saying that is close with
Fenrir Greyback. Draco shows Borgin something that scares him into
submission. Harry takes over Hermione’s role as resident brain of
the group and becomes Super Genius Harry. Super Genius Harry
realizes that Malfoy must be showing him his Dark Mark. Draco also
tells Borgin to keep something in the shop safe for him. Hermione
turns into a spy and sneaks into the shop to have a look around
and what Draco might be interested in. She questions Borgin, who
becomes suspicious and kicks her out.
The time has come for the kids to head back to Hogwarts. On the
train platform, Harry asks Mr. Weasley if he can have a word with
him. Harry warns Mr. Weasley about Draco. He is worried that Draco
is a Death Eater and that he is harboring some sort of Dark object
in his house and asking Borgin to help fix it. Mr. Weasley just
humors Harry saying he’ll check into it, but not to worry about
anything. Once again Super Genius Harry is more insightful than
everyone around him, including members of the Order of the Phoenix.
On the train, Hermione and Ron are off performing their prefect
duties. Harry asks Ginny if she wants to go find an empty
compartment, but she already promised Dean she’d go meet him.
Harry then runs into Luna and Neville and they set off to find a
compartment. Even they get extra attention in light of their
adventure in the Department of Mysteries. Neville’s Gran bought
him a new wand made of cherry wood and unicorn hair. It was one of
the last sold by Ollivander. Both Neville and Luna are
disappointed that there isn’t going to be a DA anymore. It was
like having a group of friends. Harry still in Super Genius mode
realizes how similar his childhood was to Neville’s and how easily
Neville could be in Harry’s shoes right now. Both Harry and
Neville get invitations to dine with Professor Slughorn.
Looking around the compartment every student invited to Slug’s
party has some sort of famous contact:
Neville - Frank and Alice
Harry – The Chosen One
Zabini – Famous mother
MacLaggen – Uncle is a big wig in the Ministry and knows
Scrimgeour
Belsby – Uncle is Order of Merlin and invented Wolfsbane
Ginny – impressed Slug when he caught her performing a Bat
Bogey Hex on Zacharias Smith
Harry follows Zabini back to his compartment figuring he can spy
on Draco from under the cloak. He risks everyone knowing he has
the cloak if he gets caught. He overhears Malfoy imply that he has
a job from Lord Voldemort. The other Slytherins are stunned by
this statement. When the train stops, Draco catches Harry and
stuns him with Petrificus Totalus. As he is lying on the floor
Draco breaks his nose and covers him with the cloak so no one can
find him.
Chapter 8: Snape Victorious
|
Tonks rescues Harry from the train and heals his nose. She is
stationed in Hogsmeade and knows that Harry didn’t get of the
train. She looks miserable, sad and dejected. She sends a Patronus
up to the school to send the message that they are coming. Harry
notices that her Patronus has changed in addition to her
appearance; it is now a large four-legged animal. He wants to say
something nice to Tonks to make her feel better, but wants to
avoid the topic of Sirius. He tries to think of what would
Hermione say or do in this situation.
When they get to the gates of Hogwarts, they find them locked.
Harry thinks he’ll have to sleep outside because he cannot get
passed the increased security that has been implemented over the
summer. Apparently Super Genius Harry only emerges when there is
something that is really hard to figure out. He remains amazingly
obtuse about obvious things. Tonks had sent a message to the
castle and Snape comes to let Harry in.
When Harry gets inside he has missed most of the feast. Hagrid
seems to be late too. It turns out that he was with Grawp, who is
a proper gentleman now and living in a cave in the mountains.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all awful and un-Mary-like children.
All three of them have given up Hagrid’s class and poor Hagrid
assumes they’ll be with him for N.E.W.T. Ron asks Harry if
Hermione is taking Hagrid’s class, implying that Harry knows
Hermione better than Ron does. If you ask me, Ron is a nut-head
and Harry is not much better. Just two chapters ago, Harry was
happy and excited to see Hagrid at Diagon Alley, now he is trying
to avoid making eye contact with him.
Dumbledore’s hand is as black as ever at the feast. He gets up to
make his usual welcome speech and he announces the Slughorn will
be the new potions teacher and Snape will be teaching Defense
Against the Dark Arts. Everyone is floored by this announcement.
In Chapter 2, Snape tells Bellatrix that Dumbledore had never
given him this position before because he felt that is was to
dangerous to put Snape in contact with the Dark Arts, that Snape
might be tempted to return to his old ways. Why on this green
earth would Dumbledore then decide that now is the time to finally
appoint Snape to this post? Wouldn’t the danger of Snape turning
to the Dark side be greatest now that Voldemort is stronger than
he has been in 16 years?
Chapter 9: Half-Blood Prince
|
Ron is a bully. He picks on little baby first years in a manner
befitting Malfoy. Harry is actually telling Hermione about what he
overheard Malfoy saying on the train the day before. Before
Hermione can offer her interpretation of the situation, Ron jumps
in saying Malfoy was probably just showing off for Pansy
Parkinson. Ron gets pissy when Hermione doesn’t immediately agree
with him and begins to target unsuspecting first years. Lavender
Brown apparently finds Ron very entertaining and giggles as she
passes them in the hallway. Ron in turn looks very pleased with
himself.
In the Great Hall, Hagrid is once again happy to see the kids and
they are miserably miscreants in return. Hermione is shocked and
appalled that Hagrid could think that they would want to take
N.E.W.T. level Care of Magical Creatures. They doubt anyone would
be interested in the subject anymore. When Hagrid leaves the staff
table they barely acknowledge his wave. They never acted like
horrible, bratty teenagers before this year, why start now?
McGonagall meets with each 6th year student in her house to review
their class schedule and make sure they have the appropriate O.W.L.
s to continue. Harry and Ron luckily are able to take all the same
classes and continue down the path toward becoming Aurors. They
can continue with Potions because Slughorn does not require an
‘Outstanding’ O.W.L. like Snape did.
The boys have three free periods, but they have no time to take
Hagrid’s class? We see them hanging about the common room with Ron
playing with a Fanged Frisbee that Hermione confiscated from a 4th
year. Crookshanks follows the Frisbee with her eyes, hissing when
it comes to close to her. This is just one example of how
Crookshanks’s moods and opinions mirrors those of Hermione.
Their first lesson together is Snape’s Defense Against the Dark
Arts lesson. He tells them that they will be required to learn to
cast nonverbal spells which are essential in gaining an advantage
over one’s enemies. Not every wizard can do this as it requires
extreme concentration and mind power. Hermione, who has reclaimed
her role as the nerd we know her to be, succeeds within the first
ten minutes of trying.
Harry is partnered with Ron who is very inept at nonverbal
incantations. Snape takes over to show him how it’s done. Snape
and Harry exchange words ultimately leading to Harry receiving
detention from Snape. Ron thinks Harry’s mouthing off is
brilliant, but Hermione says her really should not have done it.
She goes on to compare Harry’s views on Defense against the Dark
Arts to Snape’s going as far as to quote Harry.
“Yes, when you were telling us what it is like to face Voldemort.
You said it wasn’t just memorizing a bunch of spells, you said it
was just you and your brains and your guts ― well, wasn’t that
what Snape was saying? That it really comes down to being brave
and quick-thinking?”
Harry was so disarmed that she had thought his words as well worth
memorizing as The Standard Book of Spells that he did not argue.
Page 181, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
In between classes, Harry gets a note from Dumbledore announcing
their first lesson together. The trio tries to figure out what
Dumbledore might teach Harry during his lessons, perhaps advanced
Defensive magic. Their next lesion is Potions with Slughorn. The
class consists of four Slytherins (including Malfoy), four
Ravenclaws, and one Hufflepuff, Ernie Macmillan, who shares a
table with Ron, Hermione, and Harry.
Slughorn has various large, bubbling cauldrons already brewing in
the room. These are samples of advanced potions including
Polyjuice Potion, Veritaserum, Amortentia (the most powerful love
potion in the world), and Felix Felicis (liquid luck).
Amortentia’s fragrance is unique to each person according to what
they find attractive.
They chose the one nearest a gold-colored cauldron that was
emitting one of the most seductive smells Harry had ever inhaled:
it reminded him simultaneously of treacle tart, the woody smell of
a broomstick handle, and something flowery he thought he might
have smelled at the Burrow. He found that he was breathing slowly
and deeply and that the potion’s fumes seemed to be filling him up
like a drink. A great contentment stole over him; he grinned
across at Ron, who grinned back lazily.
Page 183, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
Harry tells Slughorn that he and Ron had not purchased the books
or supplies for the class as they thought Snape would not allow
them to continue to N.E.W.T. level. Slughorn lends them everything
until they have a chance to order their own books, etc. from
Diagon Alley.
The class reviews the potions that Slughorn has brewing around the
classroom. Hermione is the only student who can identify them all.
Slughorn remembers Harry saying that his best friend a Muggle-born
and she’s the best in his year. Slughorn asks Harry if this is the
young lady to whom he was referring. Hermione is pleased, turning
to Harry with a “radiant expression.” Ron is pissy yet again and
jealous that she is so pleased by Harry’s complement.
Slughorn offers a vile of Felix Felicis as a reward for the best
potion by the end of the period. Harry’s copy of the book is
labeled as property of the Half-Blood Prince. The instructions
for the potions in the book are annotated with useful tidbits and
additions. Harry cheats his way through by following the Prince’s
instructions and wins the prize, barely beating out Hermione. He
feels a bit guilty when he sees her look of disappointment.
Hermione is annoyed with him when she realizes how he did so well.
Ginny gets nervous when she hears that Harry is doing what a book
is telling him to do. Harry tries to convince them all that this
is completely different from Riddle’s diary. Hermione performs a
spell to reveal any enchantments that might be on the book, but it
does, in fact, seem to be just a book.
Chapter 10: The House of Gaunt
|
Harry continues to use the Half-Blood Prince’s textbook and
neither Ron nor Hermione are happy about it. By the fourth
lesson, Slughorn thinks that Harry is a prodigy, just like Lily.
The Half-Blood Prince also has spells written in the margins of
the book that he clearly created himself.
Hermione is so irritated with Harry for using the Prince’s book
that she snatches her essay away from Ron who is trying copy from
her. Ten seconds later, when Harry says he is off to his first
lesson with Dumbledore, she forgets her irritation with him and
says she is waiting up and she wants details when he gets back.
On his way to Dumbledore’s office, Harry sees Professor Trelawney
in the hallway. She is drawing cards from a deck:
“Two of spades: conflict,” she murmured, as she passed the place
where Harry crouched, hidden. “Seven of spades: an ill omen. Ten
of spades: violence. Knave of spades: a dark young man, possibly
troubled, one who dislikes the questioner ―”
Page 195, U.S. Hardcover Edition
|
Dumbledore tells Harry that they will be exploring the “murkiest
marshes of memory” in order to better understand what prompted
Voldemort to try to kill Harry 15 years ago. Again, Dumbledore’s
injured hand is mentioned (another clue?). They begin by delving
into the pensieve to visit a memory provided by Bob Ogden of the
Ministry of Magic.
It begins at the Gaunt house on the outskirts of Little Hangleton.
The family living in this run down shack consists of:
Morfin, the son: He kills snakes and has one nailed to
the front door of the house. He hates muggles and hexes
them as they pass the house on the way to the village
(this is what brings Ogden to the house). He is also a
Parseltongue. Harry doesn’t even realize it at first, he
can’t figure out why Ogden can’t understand him.
Marvolo, the father: He hates his daughter (calls her an
incompetent Squib). His son can do no wrong as far as he
is concerned. He hates all Muggles and Muggle-borns. He
also holds himself in very high regard because of his
ancestry even though he lives in squalor.
Merope, the daughter: She is miserable, unloved, and
abused. She is almost like a prisoner in her own home.
She is desperately in love with Tom Riddle, the squire’s
son.
In this chapter, we find out the origins of the ring and the
locket. The black-stoned ring with the Peverell coat of arms is
worn by Marvolo. It goes back in their family for centuries.
Merope is wearing Slytherin’s locket. The Gaunts are the last
living descendents of Slytherin. They attack Merope for betraying
the family by loving a muggle. Ogden goes to get help and both
father and son are arrested and sent to Azkaban.
Merope survived and Dumbledore believes that she hooked Tom Riddle
by making love potion. She must have at some point been so in love
that she cold no longer slip her husband the potion. He ran back
home once the enchantment wore off abandoning a pregnant Merope.
Harry asks permission to share all this with Ron and Hermione.
Dumbledore says that they have proven themselves trustworthy, but
not to tell anyone else. Harry recognizes the ring Dumbledore wore
as the Gaunt ring. Dumbledore acquired it this summer around the
same time he hurt his hand, but refuses to tell Harry the story
just yet.
