Hermione's essence pervades this book. This book is hers.
For their month a part she goes spare with worry Harry’ll do
something stupid, because no one’s giving him any answers. She
knows first-hand how reckless he can be...
Dementor attack and possible expulsion: She says a few times
that they can’t throw him out, but offers no research or
previous cases or even advice about what to say (no one else
does either...so apparently this is entirely unprecedented).
And when he returns acquitted, she’s shaking with relief.
This is a very strong reaction to have if she just knew he’d be
all right. She was obviously worried beyond belief for him, but
never let on she was really that upset over it.
It also shows that she’s aware of the situation (and how
important Harry is to it) in the real world and how dangerous
it is for all of them, especially Harry, especially if he was
left on his own or with the Dursley’s without Hogwarts to
protect and teach him. Hogwarts of course includes Dumbledore,
McGonagall, and herself.
She's also very attuned to Harry in this book. His moods, his
facial expressions...she's more tolerant and understanding of
his tantrums than perhaps she should be, she notices from his
expression that he has feelings for Cho. And here:
"They were bound to clear you," said Hermione,
who had looked positively faint with anxiety when
Harry had entered the kitchen and was now holding a
shaking hand over her eyes. "There was no case
against you, none at all..."
"Everyone seems quite relieved, though,
considering they all knew I'd get off," said Harry,
smiling.

"Yeah, he swung it for me," said Harry. He felt
that it would sound highly ungrateful, not to
mention childish, to say, "I wish he'd talked to
me, though. Or even looked at me."
And as he thought this, the scar on his
forehead burned so badly that he clapped his hand
to it.
"What's up?" said Hermione, looking alarmed.
"Scar," Harry mumbled. "But it's nothing...It
happens all the time now..."
None of the others had noticed a thing; all of
them were now helping themselves to food while
gloating over Harry's narrow escape; Fred, George,
and Ginny were still singing. Hermione looked
rather anxious, but before she could say anything,
Ron said happily, "I bet Dumbledore turns up this
evening to celebrate with us, you know."

Umbridge is an affront to something dear to her –
learning. The toad lady won’t let them learn, especially
when self-defense knowledge is crucial. Hermione
rebels, starts a rebellion in class over it (which
eventually leads Harry into getting a detention, but
that was because he didn’t know when to stop after she
warned him not to get involved).
Hermione knows where Harry will end up in this fight and
she knows she has to be ready to be at his side. That’s
why DADA is so important to her, that's why she comes up
with the idea for the DA and that’s why she forces
herself to say Voldemort’s name.
She has to be strong enough - has to start thinking of
Voldemort as a man who can be defeated. And as usual she
flourishes under Harry’s guidance – for once he teaches
her something. She’s the strongest one there aside from
him.
He looked helplessly at Hermione, whose face
was stricken.
"Harry," she said timidly, "don't you see?
This...this is exactly why we need you...We need to
know what it's r-really like...facing him...facing
V-Voldemort."
It was the first time she had ever said
Voldemort's name, and it was this, more than
anything else, that calmed Harry.

We see Harry does appreciate her valor here...he notices. This is also the
first time she's ever asked him for anything.
She's a giving person and never asks anything for herself. I think in this
book, maybe more than any other, she feels a bit abused, taken advantage
of...because she is so concerned for him and only gets her head bitten off
for her trouble.
She is exhausted by Harry's constant yelling, but at the same time I think
she realizes and feels his pain (even if he hasn't fully registered it yet)
so she can't hold it against him.
She rushes to Grimmauld Place right after she gets out of Hogwarts for
Christmas break, leaving her parents, giving up time she rarely gets to
spend with them, and a vacation.
She must fly through the house without hesitating to even greet the
Weasleys, goes immediately to Harry and, with very little effort, manages
to pull him out of his room of self-pity and into society where he can be
reassured and taken care of.
She's the only one to notice Harry in pain. Perhaps the quote
from the fourth movie would be more appropriate in this book.
"I'm scared for you."
It came as a slight shock when somebody hammered hard on the
door a few minutes later.
"I know you're in there," said Hermione's voice. "Will you
please come out? I want to talk to you."
"What are you doing here?" Harry asked her, pulling open the
door, as Buckbeack resumed his scratching at the straw-strewn
floor for any fragments of rat he might have dropped. "I thought
you were skiing with your mum and dad."
"Well, to tell the truth, skiing's not really my thing," said
Hermione. "So I've come for Christmas." There was snow in her
hair and her face was pink with cold. "But don't tell Ron that, I
told him it's really good because he kept laughing so much.
Anyway, Mum and Dad are a bit disappointed, but I've told them
that everyone who's serious about the exams is staying at
Hogwarts to study. They want me to do well, they'll understand.
Anyway," she said briskly, "let's go to your bedroom, Ron's mum's
lit a fire in there and she's sent up sandwiches."
Harry followed her back to the second floor. When he entered
the bedroom he was rather surprised to see both Ron and Ginny
waiting for them, sitting on Ron's bed.

It almost seems as if they sent for her. No one could reach Harry so they
summoned up Hermione because, quite clearly, she was the only one Harry
wanted to talk to. It's obvious because where everyone tried talking to him,
he avoided them quite successfully or at least chased them away with his
anger...Hermione comes and Poof! in two seconds he's following her out the
door. This shows his unwavering trust in her.
He trusted her implicitly about the DA as well. In that first meeting in the
Hog's Head...he blindly went along with her plan, even though the sight of
the grimy pub made them all nervous and despite the fact that he didn't want
to speak in front of all those kids...he trusted Hermione's judgement and
went along with it.
I think the Viktor Krum experience/fiasco last year made Hermione realize she
was a girl, made her feel what it’s like to be noticed and desired. Since
that part of her has been awakened she seems more observant about the other
people’s romantic lives: she’s apparently Ginny’s confidant, and she brings
up Cho to Harry and even offers him advice/explanations for Cho’s odd
behavior.
I think she wants Harry to trust her enough, to feel comfortable talking
about this stuff with her. Also, by giving her approval it might push him
into a relationship with someone she knows and approves of, someone who will
be good to him and treat him right and who won’t take him completely away so
she can still be a presence in his life.
She’s playing matchmaker, like Emma Woodhouse, in Austen’s Emma. So you know
it’s going to backfire on her. Then the Cho fiasco. Harry asks Cho to go with
him to meet Hermione – I actually cringed when I read that part. I’m not an
advocate of Cho, but come on! Of course Cho would think he’d rather spend
time with Hermione (which, in fact, he does). Poor, confused little girl.
And then Ginny uses Hermione’s advice of “get a life” to catch and hook
Harry, which I don’t think Hermione actually intended. I don’t think it was
“A Guide on How to Snatch Harry” it was meant more as...get a life. But you
can see Harry’s reaction when Ginny drops Hermione’s name. He brightens, he
respects her opinion, it's almost as if to say if Hermione says it’s okay,
well then, I guess it is. Never mind, that her previous advice about a girl
blew up in his face.
The girl who two years ago ran from a boggart because it told her she failed
everything, throws herself into preparations for OWLs with gusto, even goes
so far as to buy the boys homework planners. We all know she’s the brightest
witch in the school and she’ll ace all the exams without even studying but
once more we are shown her dedication, her diligence and her perseverance.
It’s her desire to do well, her passion for learning,
her drive, the ability to push herself, and maybe
even a little neurosis we see in her full-tilt
preparation for the exams.
We also get to see her skill and strength, time and
time again. Throughout the series she’s been called
the brightest witch of her age and she’s picked
things up before anyone else and known and been able
to do things the boys can’t, but here we get full
impact of it.
With the Protean Charm on the coins, that’s so advanced Voldemort himself has
employed it and doesn’t even begin to get taught to these kids until seventh
year. She’s in Fifth and has it mastered – so much so that the Ravenclaws
are even floored and wonder why she isn’t in their house.
Hermione mentions hexing the document the DA signed, but then nothing happens
to anyone and we all forget. Then finally the SNEAK reveals herself –
Hermione’s hex is so strong and powerful no on can remove it. Not Madame
Pomfrey, not even the Healers at St. Mungo’s. She’s that frickin' good! (And
apparently really good at charms...like Harry’s mum?)
And the answer to the age old question of why Hermione got sorted into
Gryffindor in the first place (if you haven’t already figured it out), is
illustrated, definitively, beyond a shadow of a doubt, at the climax of this
book with the flight to the Ministry to save Sirius. She knows it’s a trap,
she begs Harry to see reason and even though he can’t see past his panic, she
persists and gets him to at least check the floo.
“Okay,” said Hermione, “well then, Harry, you and I will be
under the Invisibility Cloak, and we’ll sneak into the office and
you can talk to Sirius –”
“He’s not there, Hermione!”
“I mean, you can – can check whether Sirius is at home or not
while I keep watch, I don’t think you should be in there alone,
Lee’s already proved the window’s a weak spot, sending those
nifflers through it.”
Even through his anger and impatience Harry recognized
Hermione’s offer to accompany him into Umbridge’s office as a
sign of solidarity and loyalty.
“I...okay, thanks,” he muttered.

She goes with him to Umbridge’s office to stand guard over him. She knows
this is definite expulsion, a crime once worse than death, but risks it
anyway to hopefully stave off disaster. Then once again, her quick thinking
saves Harry from the Cruciatus Curse. She hatches a plan to get rid of
Umbridge and by the skin of her teeth, they scrape through.
And taking deep breath, she cried, "Cruc -"
"NO!" shouted Hermione in a cracked voice from behind
Millicent Bulstrode. "No - Harry - Harry, we'll have to tell her!"
"No way!" yelled Harry, staring at the little of Hermione he
could see.
"We'll have to, Harry, she'll force it out of you anyway,
what's...what's the point...?"
And Hermione began to cry weakly into the back of Millicent
Bulstrode's robes. Millient stopped trying to squash her against
the wall immediately and dodged out of her way looking disgusted.
"Well, well, well!" said Umbridge, looking triumphant.
"Little Miss Question-All is going to give us some answers! Come
on then, girl, come on!"
"Er - my - nee - no!" shouted Ron through his gag.
Ginny was staring at Hermione as though she had never seen
her before; Neville, still choking for breath, was gazing at her
too. But Harry had just noticed something. Though Hermione was
sobbing desperately into her hands, there was no trace of a
tear...

She basically just saved his life. And he goes along with her blindly again,
trusting that she has some type of plan as he and Umbridge follow her into
the Forbidden Forest.
And then Harry is all set to leave her behind to
protect her, but she won’t hear of it. She’s going
with him to face whatever may come right at his side.
Despite the fact that her life is more at risk then
some of the others because she’s a muggleborn,
despite the fact that she knows it’s a trap and
probably has a more accurate idea of the horrors that
may await them, she willingly chooses to go with him.
If that’s not courage, if that's not friendship and
honor, I don’t know what is.
And despite nearly dying (cause let’s face it we all
thought that for a second) and then finding out that
death hangs over your best friend’s head, she still
goes along with him. She chooses to walk beside him
into hell and fight their way out.
Hermione Granger is one hell of a girl...one hell of a woman!
