This is the first book in which Blood Bigotry comes into major
focus and is even the subject of the plot. We learn what the term
“mudblood” means and of the disgusting superiority purebloods
presume to have over everyone else.
Hermione gets called that horrible name for the first time ever
so she and Harry don’t even understand it. It’s apparently so bad
everyone who’s within hearing distance reacts and reacts
violently.
“At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy
their way in,” said Hermione sharply. “They got in on
pure talent.”
The smug look on Malfoy’s face flickered.
“No one asked your opinion, you filthy little
Mudblood,” he spat.
“Harry knew at once that Malfoy had said something
really bad because there was an instant uproar at his
words. Flint had to dive in front of Malfoy to stop Fred
and George jumping on him, Alicia shrieked, “How dare
you!”, and Ron plunged his hand into his robes, pulled
out his wand, yelling, “You’ll pay for that one, Malfoy!”
and pointed it furiously under Flint’s arm at Malfoy’s
face.

It is explained to the kids that hatred and misjudgments exist in
this world making it just as real as our non-magical world. They
trust Hagrid and seek him out to help Ron.
“Malfoy called Hermione something – it must’ve been
really bad, because everyone went wild.”
“It was bad,” said Ron, emerging over the tabletop
looking pale and sweaty. “Malfoy called her a ‘Mudblood,’
Hagrid –”
Ron dived out of sight again as a fresh wave of slugs
made their appearance. Hagrid looked outraged.
“He didn’!” he growled at Hermione.
“He did,” she said. “But I don’t know what it means.
I could tell it was really rude, of course –”
“It’s about the most insulting thing he could think
of,” gasped Ron, coming back up. “Mudblood’s a really
foul name for someone who is Muggle-born...I mean, the
rest of us know it doesn’t make any difference at all...”
“An’ they haven’t invented a spell our Hermione can’
do,” said Hagrid proudly, making Hermione go a brilliant
shade of magenta.

Hagrid’s compliment touches her so much so blushes. In the movie,
he all but saves the day for her, tears glistening in her eyes.
It’s nice to know she’s noticed. And defended by so many people,
even some she doesn’t really know.
She learns that her life is in danger in this book. Not only by
ignorant bigots, but by the returned Heir of Slytherin. This
danger is very real and very tangible. But instead of getting
scared and backing down, this serves to drive Hermione.
She researches and brews the Polyjuice Potion, stealing
ingredients from Snape right under his hooked nose.
She gets hurt a lot in this one, first by being transformed into a cat and
then by being petrified. This is the first time she’s taken out.
Last year, Ron was injured and Hermione had to make a choice to stay with
Harry until the end. She did stay, until the choice was taken out of her
hands. But that was not before she beat Snape’s logic puzzle and got Harry
through to the end.
Even here, getting hurt, seeing kids just like her be targeted and knowing she
may be next, she still plunges ahead. She does eventually discover the mystery
of the chamber, its monster and how it moves, which is something not even
Dumbledore managed.
She has cunning and initiative and creativity when attacking a problem. She
has skill well above her class range, already in second year performing magic
those in their OWL year have trouble with. (And then later in Fifth Year doing
things they only start to teach you in Seventh Year.) The girl’s a bona fide
genius.
And she’s logical and clearly thought out. She wants all sides of the story
and to know something definitively before taking action. The boys just know
that Malfoy’s the Heir of Slytherin, but no one can be certain. So Hermione
devises a way to interrogate him without an interrogation. And it turns out
she was right, it’s not Malfoy after all. And her foresight manages to save
her own and another girl’s life!
We see her strength and fortitude, her skill and ingenuity in this novel. She
is integral to the group and the advancement of their cause, their knowledge,
not to mention the plot.
Harry tried not to laugh as he watched Malfoy hurry
forward, his head drooping with the weight of a nose like
a small melon. As half the class lumbered up to Snape's
desk, some weighted down with arms like clubs, others
unable to talk through gigantic puffed-up lips, Harry saw
Hermione slide back into the dungeon, the front of her
robes bulging.

She's become quite the little rule-breaker.
How long was she petrified, the whole time knowing the secret of the basilisk
and its movement through the school in the pipes, before Harry found the slip
of paper in her hand? Then and only then, does he piece things together.
Hermione saves the day and she’s not even conscious!
Hermione is at risk in this book. There is a monster loose in
the castle hunting muggleborns. Though Hermione knows of the
dangers, she never hides or runs away from it. She never even
backs down from Malfoy when he throws the term around like it’
s just another word. She is strong and courageous and shows
backbone, determination and her will. She is a Gryffindor all
the way.
