Full Name:
Nickname:
Date of Birth:
Place of Birth:
Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England
Siblings:
The youngest son of an artist-turned furniture maker, Roy, and a sculptress, Dee, Broadbent had
art in his genes. After briefly attending an art school, he found that his passion was acting. He
graduated from London Academy of Music and Drama in 1972.
Often regarded as one of the best character actors in cinema, Broadbent has displayed his acting
chops in many supporting and lead roles alongside other master actors, such as: Dame Judi
Dench, Imelda Staunton, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gene Hackman, Helen Mirren and Sir Anthony
Hopkins.
He has starred on stage and in films and television; he’s also appeared on radio in The
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Saturday Night Fry with Stephen Fry. Broadbent was even
nominated for a Grammy for Best Spoken Word for a Children’s Album of Winnie the Pooh in
2004.
Unfortunately, character actors are often overshadowed by their big name co-stars. Broadbent
has appeared in well over 100 projects, but many audiences would recognize his face before his
name. He has achieved some accolades but not as many as he deserves.
He has weathered some storms in his personal life. He had a twin sister who died at birth and
his mother was ravaged by Alzheimer’s disease eventually succumbing to it in 1995.
Broadbent later used this experience with the dreadful disease in his role in Iris. His character
cared for his wife as she battled Alzheimer’s, his portrayal won an Academy Award.
However, not all has been sad: he has been happily married to painter/theater designer
Anastasia Lewis since 1987.
Broadbent’s turn as Horace Slughorn in Half-Blood Prince (and the second part of the Deathly
Hallows movie) will mark the second time he’s worked with Tom Felton. The two acted together
in The Borrowers in 1997.
In a recent interview, Felton shared that he was thrilled to be working with Broadbent again and
was surprised Broadbent even remembered him from The Borrowers.
Co-stars and directors have nothing but good things to say about him and maybe it’s because he
has a great mentality on set:
“I always think you should be totally frivolous as much as you can,
and then take the work seriously when it has to be taken seriously. As long as
you can keep that balance going, it's good fun. If it's only frivolous it's not
fun - it would drive me potty.”
